HI, I’M ULI
I am a disability advocate, consultant, podcaster, changemaker, person with disability and NDIS participant.
I focus my lived experience and professional expertise on practical and productive advocacy that improves services and supports for people with disability.
My start to life was like going six rounds with Mike Tyson. I was born with multiple chronic health conditions and spent the first three years of my life living in hospital. Despite not being expected to live much past my second birthday, somewhere along the way I decided there was too much to give up on – so I fought back.
Fast forward a couple of decades and I’ve been able to achieve a lot.
My current roles and areas of focus
- Systemic Advocate with VALiD (Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with Disability) (February 2024-).
- Protest organiser – I organised a protest against the gag law enabling abuse of people with disability on the steps of Parliament House on February 8, 2024. It’s part of my campaign to change the Gag Law – Clause 37, Schedule 1 of the VCAT Act.
- Board Member at Villamanta Disability Rights Legal Service (2023-)
- Podcast host at We Think Out Loud. Learn more about the podcast. (2023-).
- User Experience Committee member for My Lived iD (2021-). Founder and Director of Life is a Battlefield (2020-).
My past roles and achievements
- Gave evidence to the Disability Royal Commission hearing into guardianship and administration, which went on to make a recommendation based on my evidence (2022).
- VALID8 Advisor with VALiD (Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with Disability) (year-2023)
- Member of the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) Participant First Reference Group (2022-current)
- First person with disability to hold the position of Client Engagement Officer at Life Without Barriers (2015-2018)
- Collaborated with Mable to develop material for social media (2023)
- Released a movie about my life, Life is a Battlefield, which had to be taken offline because I identified myself as a former client of Victoria’s State Trustees. I won the right to regain control of my finances by having State Trustees removed, and the movie is back online. (2021) Learn more about the movie.
